I am a big fan of author and illustrator Edward Gorey who wrote strange gothicky tales peopled by scratchily sketched orphaned children, confused aristocracy and the occasional creature from his imagination (see The Doubtful Guest left).

My favourite is The Gashlycrumb Tinies a book of rhyming couplets detailing the demise of 26 unfortunate children...

A is for Amy who fell down the stairs
B is for Basil assaulted by bears
C is for Clara who wasted away
D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh
E is for Ernest who choked on a peach
and so on...

And now, thanks to Texture Culture I see that Don Kenn provides rather an excellent dot-dash-dot sketchy follow up - his drawings (which he does on Post-Its) are more obviously monstrous than Gorey's, but I like 'em.
